Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh, India is a predominant agricultural district. The aqua cultural farms that are being set up recently in this region are suffering from the invasion of pesticides used in high quantities for agricultural practices. The fish Labeo rohita commonly cultured in this region along with other Indian major carps is heavily affected by the pesticide intoxication through leaching from the near by agricultural fields and irrigation canals. The fish affected by the pesticides could pose a health problem to the consumers. Majority of pesticide residues are known to bio-accumulate in the lipid tissues of fish and other animals, and transfer via food chain to the human bodies, the grave risk to the health of the people who consume these fish seems to be considerable. The need to protect the people from undue exposure to the pesticide residues through the food chain cannot be over emphasized. Though we cannot avoid the use of pesticides, measures should be taken for the conservation of the water and also the aquatic resources.
